Not too hot, not too cold' begins the prescription for a world that's just right for life as we know it. Finding evidence of life beyond Earth is one of the primary goals of science agencies around the world, thanks in large part to NASA's Kepler Mission which launched in 2009 with the objective of finding Goldilocks planets orbiting other stars like our Sun. The 2017 Beatrice Hill Tinsley Lecturer is Dr Natalie Batalha, an astrophysicist at NASA Ames Research Center and the Mission Scientist for NASA's Kepler Mission. She will present an overview of the science legacy of the Kepler Mission and other key discoveries. She'll give a preview of what's to come by highlighting the missions soon to launch and those that are concepts taking shape on the drawing board. This event is hosted in collaboration with the Otago Institute for the Arts and Sciences and the Otago Museum.
Lionel Richie announces Australia and New Zealand tour! Motown R&B icon Lionel Richie is coming to New Zealand in October, and judging by the tour name, it'll be a night of old favourites. The All the Hits Tour will be singing 'Hello' to Christchurch on October 19 and Auckland on October 21. Richie will be joined by CHIC, featuring legendary musician and producer Nile Rodgers. Rodgers was recently part of the production team behind Daft Punk's 'Get Lucky' and 'Lose Yourself to Dance'. The former Commodores singer behind hits like 'All Night Long', 'Dancing on the Ceiling' and 'Easy' was last here in 2014, when he toured with John Farnam. The Commodores have a New Zealand connection - bass player and writer of the hit 'Brick House' Ronald LaPread moved here years ago, and reunited with Richie onstage at his 2014 show. A bevy of poets mark 50 years since the end of six o'clock closing Iain Sharp presents Gregory O’Brien, Apirana Taylor, Freya Daly Sadgrove, Bill Manhire, Jenny Bornholdt, Lindsay Rabbitt, and more. The end of the ‘6 o’clock swill’ was a defining moment in New Zealand’s social history, one which changed the way we drank and socialised. New Zealanders’ unique and often fraught relationship with drink has been both a stimulus and an inspiration for some of the country’s great poets from Denis Glover to Apirana Taylor. To mark 50 years since the end of ‘the swill’ the National Library is bringing together some of the country’s best poets, and poetry, both new and old, featuring ‘the drink’. The event will comprise some special related Alexander Turnbull Library collection items, music from the collection of the National Library and films from Ngā Taonga Sound and Vision. Refreshments available with tastings and craft beer and cider. Photo credit: Jason O’Hara

Go Wilde! This brilliantly clever and inventive comedy of manners is without peer. A triumph of subtlety and sophistication, The Importance of Being Earnest is a masterpiece of polished decadence – one of the funniest plays ever written. Jack Worthing has made something of himself, despite not knowing his own parental origins beyond that he was found as a baby in a handbag that was left in a cloakroom at Victoria station. Now, as he courts Lady Bracknell's daughter Gwendolen Fairfax, he has some explaining (and social climbing) to do.But then no one is quite who they seem in this play. Stylish and stylized, this satire of London society and social conventions features true love, false identities, guilty secrets, cucumber sandwiches, and the grandest dame in drama, Lady Bracknell. TICKETS $27.00
